Aya iman anganko so ibabaga ran "onakar ya anggapo'y sali tan ontekiab ya anggapo'y payak."

A Night Piece
from a Pangasinan serenade entitled "Malinak la'y Labi"

your eyes excelled the morning sun
your smile laden my breast with flame
i’ll boast upon that lilting sun
your beauty worthy of a name
O what shall I give but a song
a song to sing my love for you
a song to time and space belong
until the world is born anew

the night is calm my love
and time is fleeting still
the wind is breathing low
kissed by the evening dew
how sweet it is to dream
that i have to wake for you
your fair attemper face
i shall always caress
O when the night is come
and you my love i see
the sadness all is gone
buried deeply in my soul
whenever i recall
loving ways you are wont to
i shall not forget you
until i am laid to rest

--

from Pangasinan Melodies

O when i behold the westering sun
& feel over me the fall of the night
when bamboo leaves i hear humming as one
sweet symphony ‘neath the gleaming moonlight

& summer’s breathing attemper & low
whispering uncouth sounds in my ears
perhaps untold secrets that i should know
or unheard love songs in the olden years
i think of thee  beloved  of our prime
still strong
     still in love
          & still young at heart
dancing the tango moments of our time
before the winds of death keep us apart

but bear in mind  my love  that i love thee
& this will always remind thee of me

Dalityapi sa Huling Paglalakbay

I read the following poem during the Pangasinan Festival of Culture and the Arts at the Faculty Center, UP-Diliman last December 3, 2007. This poem is about the last voyage of the Cattle Caravans of Ancient Caboloan.

Dalityapi sa Huling Paglalakbay

1.

ang mga bumabaroy ng Caboloan
ilang salin-lahi din silang naghari
sa mga daan at lansangan upang sundan
ang bakas ng kanilang mga ninuno
at haraya ng lalawigang pinagmulan

salamin ang kanilang paglisan
ng mabagal na pag-usad ng panahon
at pananatili ng kinagisnang yaman-lahi
larawan sila ng tadhanang nasa bingit
ng pagkawala at debolusyon

bawat hakbang sa kanilang paglalakbay
ay bilang ng mga hapung sandali
hanggang sa marating ang lilim kung saan
pansamantalang mananahanan
at palipasin and lalim at lihim ng gabi

2.

Writers Become Dancers at Lolo’s Bar

The night’s poetic inertia could not be carried by fleeting words alone. It was during 4K Barrel’s set, just after the open-mic, when writers and audience alike hit the dance floor, fleshing-out metaphors and rhymes into upbeat swings, turns and gyrations. And so they did strut their wares.

But the OragonRepublic.Com Writers’ Night last July 19 started rather nice and serene. Webmaster/owner Fer Basbas gave the usual welcome address with Literary Editor Jose Jason L. Chancoco as host. The guest writers/readers were Ford Scholar Frank Peñones, Kabulig Auditor Marissa Casillan, Kabulig President Estelito Jacob, Salakab ringleader Jo Bisuña, Medtech-Poet Sonny Sendon, Kabulig Treasurer Dr. Judith Salamat, Vox Bikol columnist Vic Nierva, Catanduanes writer Gerry Rubio, ‘Tigsik Queen’ Aida Cirujales, The Pillars staffer Elmer Ramos, and love poets Lance Gulim and Tess Rey. The 4K Barrel also rendered Bikol songs during the intermission

Also in attendance were Bikolista and entrepreneur Ramon ‘Ringer’ Olaño, Bikol Reporter columnist Rizaldy Manrique, writer/artist Djoanna Tanji and Webmaster/Events Organizer Sheila Basbas.

Invited or listed poets were the first to perform, although everybody could come up the stage later during the open-mic. Free drinks and certificates were provided and awarded to the participants by Andy Belmonte of Lolo’s Bar and Fer Basbas of ORC.

The OragonRepublic.Com and Lolo’s Bar aim to hold regular poetry readings in support of Bikol literature. For more information log on to http://www.oragonrepublic.com and http://www.lolosbar.com -- Jose Jason L. Chancoco
