Meet the Philippine PEN Authors
Bienvenido Lumbera
National Artist for Literature. Bienvenido Lumbera is well-known for his seminal works in criticism, which include Tagalog Poetry 1570-1898: Tradition and Influences in Its Development; Abot-Tanaw: Sulyap at Suri sa Nagbabagong Kultura at Lipunan; and Writing the Nation/Pag-akda ng Bansa. His poetry collections include Likhang Dila, Likhang Diwa and Balaybay: Mga Tulang Lunot at Manibalang. He has produced a number of significant librettos which have been produced on stage, such as Tales of the Manuvu; Rama Hari; Nasa Puso ang Amerika; Noli Me Tangere: The Musical; Hibik at Himagsik Nina Victoria Laktaw; and Banaag at Sikat. Lumbera is a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts. He holds the title of Professor Emeritus at the University of the Philippines. He is the current Chairman of Philippine PEN.
Marjorie Evasco
Marjorie Evasco writes in two languages: Cebuano-Visayan and English. She received the Manila Critics Circle’s National Book Awards for all her five books: Dreamweavers (poetry); Ochre Tones: Poems in English and Cebuano; Six Women Poets: Inter/Views; A Life Shaped by Music (creative nonfiction); and Ani: The Life and Art of Hermogena Borja Lungay. She has participated in various literary festivals including the XVIII International Festival of Poetry in Medellin, Colombia, and the VI International Poetry Festival in Granada, Nicaragua. She is the recipient of the 2010 SEA Write Award. She is Professor of literature and creative writing at De La Salle University in Manila.
Jun Cruz Reyes
Writer, painter, sculptor, film documentarist. Jun Cruz Reyes is best known for his fearless novels, such as Utos ng Hari (King’s Decree) and Tutubi, Tutubi ‘Wag Kang Magpahuli sa Mamang Salbahe (Dragonfly, Dragonfly, Don’t Allow Yourself to Get Caught by a Bad Guy). He received the Gawad Alagad ni Balagtas given by the Unyon ng Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL) in 2002. If one writes to “to irritate power,” Reyes is said to be one writer who consistently writes to upset the State and society. He is an Assistant Professor of the College of Arts and Letters at the University of the Philippines.
Herminio Beltran, Jr.
Herminio Beltran, Jr. is the author of Lemlunay and Bayambang, collections of poetry in Filipino, Iloko and English. He is the editor-in-chief of ANI, the literary journal published by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). He is currently the Head of the CCP Literary Arts Division. In 2002, he received the Gawad Alab ng Haraya given by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) for outstanding articles on culture and the arts.
Charlson Ong
Fictionist, scriptwriter, singer extraordinaire. Charlson Ong’s first novel Embarrassment of Riches won a Centennial Literary Prize given by the Philippine Government. His short stories are included in the collections Men of the East and Other Stories; Woman of Am-Kaw and Other Stories; and Conversion and Other Fictions. Banyaga: Song of War is his second novel. He teaches literature and creative writing with the University of the Philippines’ Department of English and Comparative Literature.

singa ka talampong ya milulureyan
maagap onapireng ed kanonotan
lautla no malinak so labin aya
tan naalong na bitewe'y katawenan
yumis na imis mo'y onggulis ed lupa'y
managaag... nialonggawit ya bulan
ed sayak labat nipinta so limgas mo
O Vijaya na niarawin doongan
naayos ed ibetag na balatabat
no ombalitok la'y bukig o letakan
ta say inlirak ya luna et ilalam
say inusar kon kolor anlong tan dangoan
nia'y impangaron ghazal pinabli anggan

Santiago B. Villafania, Pangasinan poet, is the author of poetry collections Pinabli tan arum ni'ran Anlong (Beloved & Other Poems), Balikas na Caboloan (Voices from Caboloan) published by the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts (NCCA) under its UBOD New Authors Series (2005) and Malagilion: Sonnets tan Villanelles (2007). Villafania is one of the 11 Outstanding Pangasinenses conferred with the 2010 ASNA Award for the Arts and Culture (literature) category during the first-ever Agew na Pangasinan and 430th Foundation Day of Pangasinan on April 2010.
