Pangasinan is 430 years old
LINGAYEN—If nothing else stands in the way, the province will likely observe and celebrate Pangasinan’s founding day for the first time on April 5, on the occasion of its 430th anniversary.
A special committee created by Governor Amado Espino Jr. last year has determined after painstaking research that Pangasinan, as a territory, was founded by the Spaniards on April 5, 1580.
Dr. Gonzalo Duque, former vice governor of Pangasinan and president of Lyceum-Northwestern University who chaired the committee, said their finding was based on available documents in various libraries in the Philippines and the National Historical Institute (NHI).
However, Duque and Provincial Board Member Alfonso Bince Jr. clarified that the date is not yet set in stone.
While the committee is still open to documented results of additional research that may be conducted by scholars in the future, Duque and Bince believe that the date established by the committee should already be adopted as the province’s founding day.

Tangway at Tagaytay, tinatahak
Taong 2010 ang pinakamakabuluhang taon sa kasalukuyang kasaysayan ng panitikang Kabitenyo. Ilulunsad ng Cavite Young Writers Association, Inc. (CYWA) ang Tangway at Tagaytay, isang kalipunan ng akda ng mga batang manunulat na isinilang, nagmula, o di kaya ay naninirahan ngayon sa lalawigan.
Ang pangalan ng kalipunan na Tangway at Tagaytay ay mula sa dalawang bayang nagsisilbing bakood sa magkabilang dulo ng buong lalawigan ng Cavite. Ayon kay Alessandra Rose Miguel, kasapi ng CYWA at isa sa mga patnugot, “in the old Spanish era, the land mass was referred to as “Tangway,” roughly translated in English as peninsula.” Samantalang ang Tagaytay naman ang siyang pinakamataas na bahagi ng lalawigan. Tulad ng kahulugan ng pangalan, nangangarap na maging komprehensibo rin pagdating sa saklaw na mga manunulat at paksa ng mga akda ang kalipunan.
Sa pamumuno ni Efren R. Abueg, ang proyektong aklat ay nagsimula noong 2003. Agad itong binuno at binuo upang tumugon sa mga pagbabago sa sining at kultura ng lalawigang hitik din sa mga makasaysayang pangyayari. Isa sa ipinagmamalaki ng proyektong aklat ay ang maging lunan at lunsaran ng panitikang mula at para sa lalawigan partikular na nga sa Cavite.
Hangad ng Tangway at Tagaytay na makatulong sa pagdidiin sa halaga ng pagsulat mula sa punto de bista ng “tagaloob” o sa ganitong kaso, ng tubong Cavite at ng mga indibidwal na piniling manahan dito. Ayon pa kay Miguel mula sa isinulat niyang pambungad ng aklat, “the anthology, however, wishes to simply illustrate Cavite from the eyes of its inhabitants.”
Naniniwala ang mga nagtaguyod ng Tangway at Tagaytay na ito ay magdudulot ng mas masigla pang pag-aaral sa sining at kultura ng lalawigan. Sa pamamagitan ng mga ito ay magiging mas malaki at makabuluhan ang ambag ng Cavite sa pagbuo ng pambansang kasaysayan at panitikan.
Itinatampok sa aklat ang mga likha nina Jose Marte Abueg, Mesandel Arguelles, Nestor Barco, Jimmuel Naval, Axel Pinpin, Joel Toledo, Jose Victor Torres, Santiago Villafania, at iba pang mga batang manunulat ng Cavite, ang mga propesyunal at baguhan, lalaki at babae, nakapag-aral at iyong walang pormal na edukasyon. May bahagi itong magsasalaysay ng kasaysayan ng panitikang Cavite, iyong mula sa panahon ng pananakop tulad ng makatang pari na nagsulat sa wikang Cantonese noong ikalabing-anim na siglo at hanggang sa kasalukuyan tulad ng ilang kasapi ng CYWA.
Ito ang kauna-unahang gawaing pampanitikan na pinondohan ng kasalukuyang lokal na pamahalaan sa pamumuno ni Gobernador Erineo Maliksi. Ayon pa kay Maria Pamela Maranca, kasapi ng CYWA at isa rin sa mga patnugot, nakatakdang makatanggap ng mga sipi ang mga paaralan ng lalawigan.
Kaya’t abangan, dahil ngayong 2010, ang mula sa Kabitenyo ay para sa Kabitenyo lalong lalo na sa larangan ng malikhaing pagsulat at panitikan.

ANACBANUA Screening at U.P. Film Center
Press Release
The U.P. Subol in cooperation with the Sine Caboloan and the Ulupan na Pansiansia’y Salitan Pangasinan (UPSP) [Association for the Preservation of the Pangasinan Language] will screen for the first time in Metro Manila the award-winning Anacbanua (The Child of the Sun), the first full-length digital feature film in the Pangasinan language with English subtitles, on February 24, 2010, 7 pm at the Cine Adarna, U.P. Film Center, U.P. Diliman, Quezon City.
Written, produced, directed, and edited by Pangasinan filmmaker Christopher Gozum, the experimental film won the Digital Lokal Lino Brocka Grand Prize as well as the Digital Lokal Best Director Award during the 11th Cinemanila International Film Festival in October 2009.
Using the Pangasinan poetry of Santiago Villafania, Erwin Fernandez and Melchor Orpilla and Pangasinan oraciones as well as the ancient Calatagan pot script as voice-over narration, Anacbanua is a story of an exiled Western-educated Umaanlong (poet) who, suffering from an unknown illness, decides to return to Pangasinan, the land of his birth. Upon his return, he encounters the Musia (muse) who would seek the cure to his illness. While in half-sleep, the uprooted poet would meet the Ogaw (child) who would guide him in his cosmic immersion testing him in the ways of the fermented fish sauce, butchered livestock, burned metal rods, molded clay and the baked bricks leading him to finally reclaim his primal connection to the water (danum), land (uma) and his people (katooan). Upon surviving the series of tests, the poet would return to the real world ready to offer himself towards the cultural renaissance of his own people; thus, he would become one with the Musia (muse).
Coinciding with the UP Diliman Arts and Culture Month, the screening will be preceded by the showing of another prize-winning Gozum short experimental film in the Pangasinan language, the Surreal Random MMS Texts para ed Ina, Agui, tan Kaamong ya Makakailiw ed Sika: Gurgurlis ed Banua (Surreal Random MMS Texts for a Mother, a Sister and a Wife Who Longs for You: Landscape with Figures), which won for the filmmaker the Ishmael Bernal Award for Young Cinema during the 10th Cinemanila International Film Festival in 2008.
Founded in 1975, the U.P. Subol is an organization of UP students from Pangasinan promoting Pangasinan culture in the university. Founded in 2007 by filmmaker Christopher Gozum, the Sine Caboloan is a film production company committed to producing independent digital feature films about the Pangasinan region and its people in the homeland and in the diaspora. Established in 2000, the Ulupan na Pansiansia’y Salitan Pangasinan, the only literary organization promoting the Pangasinan language, aims to create a pool of creative writers in various genres: poetry, essay, creative fiction as well as creative non-fiction. The gathering of these three organizations presages the exciting revitalization and development of Pangasinan culture in the years to come.
