sonito 209
(para ed si Maria P. Magsano*)

*Maria Prado Magsano was born on February 3, 1883. She studied at the University of the Philippines and was the first female teacher from Pangasinan who passed the civil service. She taught at the Philippine Normal College (now University) for 20 years.
In the 1930s, she was active in the promotion of women's rights and became the president of The Women Suffragists.
During this period, she also edited Silew, the monthly magazine of the Pangasinan Review Press (which became the Pangasinan Courier in 1948) and published literary works. Her writings are said to have set the direction for old and new writers in Pangasinan.
Two of her novels, Kuritan ko nen Bakal (Written during the War) and Samban Ag Nabenegan (Unretracted Vow), were translated into English. Some of her short stories and plays were not published.
She received the President's Award during the Women's Rights Day in 1966.
She died on May 25, 1968 at the age of 84.

Ilocano version / translation of my sonito 207: hacienda luisita by Henry R. Onia.
para kadakuada nga nababaknang

ngem iti dara nga nagtedged iti daga
nasam-it ti ling-et ti mannalon

My muse is too elusive again this past couple of days. I have not written anything except for a few lines of haiku. Oh me! there is such a thing as writer's block.

Tagalog version / translation of sonito 207.
(hacienda luisita)
para sa kanila na mga anakbanua
na isinilang sa lipi ng mga burgis
mahal pa ang katas ng tubo
kaysa dugong papatak sa lupa
matamis ang pawis ng timawang
pinipiga sa gintong darapilan
subalit mailap ang ginhawang
minimithi't inaasam-asam
sa likod ng maaliwalas mong mukha
ganap kang kalbaryo O Luisita
sapagkat dinilig ng dugo at luha
ang sagana at mayaman mong dibdib
walang kasing pait ang panlasa ko
sa bukal ng dilo sa'yong mga suso

Another poem about Urduja inspired by a recent email I received from a doctoral student of Filipino literature in the U.S. Her dissertation will include a chapter discussing Pangasinan's beleaguered Princess Urduja.
How and when did I first learn of Urduja? Is Urduja really a part of Pangasinan’s oral history?
I guess I will have to wait for that interview this coming January :-p

Thirty Endangered Languages in the Philippines (PDF)
There are between 100 and 150 languages spoken in the Philippines today. A fourth of these languages—thirty-two—are spoken by different Negrito ethnolinguistic populations scattered throughout the archipelago (Grimes 2000). They are considered to be the aborigines of the Philippines whose ancestors migrated into these islands over 20,000 years ago.

Of Pangasinan Grammar Books and Dictionaries
I learned about the grammar and dictionaries of the Pangasinan language when I first read the Pangasinan Grammar (1970) by Rev. Fidel Amurrio.
A couple of years ago or so, I received a copy of the Diccionario Pangasinan-Español (1865) by Fr. Lorenzo Fernandez-Cosgaya courtesy of Dr. Carl Rubino thru Dr. R. David Zorc.
I was also able to secure a copy of Gramatica tan Diccionario na Salitay Pangasinan (1923) by Ernest Rayner. Then there is the latest Pangasinan-English Dictionary compiled by Mel V. Jovellanos.
I am sure there are few more Pangasinan grammar books and dictionaries available but quite rare, out-of-print and/or part of a private collection. I would love to have some copies for my Pangasinaniana collection.
Here are some the titles:
- A contrastive analysis of English and Pangasinan (1968) by Schachter, Paul Morris
- An English-Pangasinan dictionary (1975) by Constantino, Ernesto,1930-
- Arte de la lengua Pangasinan :o, caboloan, Corr. aum. y llevando en si el mismo compendio (1904) by Pellicer, Mariano
- Morphological analysis of English and Pangasinan verbs (1981) by De Garcia. Alta Grace Q.
- New English-Pilipino-Pangasinan dictionary (1976) by Silverio, Julio F.
- Pangasinan dictionary (1971) by Benton, Richard Anthony
- Pangasinan reference grammar (1971) by Benton, Richard Anthony
- Phonotactics of Pangasinan (1972) by Benton, Richard Anthony
- Spoken Pangasinan (1971) by Benton, Richard Anthony
- Stress and intonation difficulties of Pangasinan learners of English and drill exercises for correction (1961) by Versoza, Paciencia E.
- The sounds and the sounds symbols of the Pangasinan language (1927) by Viray, Felizberto B.
- The sounds of language :an inquiry into the role of genetic factors in the development of sound systems (1961) by Brosnahan, L. F. (Leonard Francis
- Vocabulario Castellano-Pangasinan (1898) by Austria Macaraeg, Anastacio

Well, methinks somebody started a fan site for Cirilo Bautista already. Found the blog site via ExpectoRANTS.

After a very unproductive and unpoetic week, I finally came out with another sonnet attempts in Pangasinan. Methinks Malagilion: Soniton Pangasinan will not just be a 200-page book as I am very sure I'll be adding more before its printing.

Pangasinan Day awardees named
Illustrious Pangasinenses who left behind good name and worthy deeds will be given homage and recognition during the observance of Pangasinan Day on November 13 in San Carlos City.
The partial list of outstanding Pangasinenses to be honored are the late Pangasinan governors Daniel Maramba (Sta. Barbara), Francisco Duque (Aguilar), Aguedo Agbayani (Lingayen), Senator Cipriano Primicias (Alcala), Congressman Angel Fernandez (Dagupan City), Doña Eva Macaraeg-Macapagal (who accordingly was born in Barangay Guelew, San Carlos City), Dr. Martin Posadas (San Carlos City), Mayor Benigno Gubatan (Mangaldan), Mayor Artemio Frias (founder of Basista); Rep. Antonio Villar Sr. (Sto. Tomas), Don Nemesio Chong (first municipal mayor of Manaoag), Health Secretary Alfredo Bengzon of Lingayen (founder of the Barangay Health Workers).
Some of the nominees for outstanding Pangasinenses are Jess Garcia (sports), Gen. Jose Calimlim (military service), Mrs. Mercedes Chan (education), Joyce Bernal (Performing Arts), Raul "Insyong" Tamayo (music, Pangasinan songs), Barangay Captain Carlito Dion of Bued, Calasiao (solid waste management), Edwardo Guevarra (organic agriculture), Venancio Abalos (livelihood, mushroom culture); Conrado Estrella Sr. (public service), Juanito "Jun" Velasco (journalism), and Dr. Salvador Duque (private education). Read the full story...
For some reasons, literary figures in Pangasinan are actually nothing. They (the so-called selection committee) give more priorities to politicians. However, I'm still glad they nominated Joyce Bernal (Performing Arts), Raul Tamayo (Pangasinan Music) and Jun Velasco (Journalism) for Outstanding Pangasinenses.
Our prominent literati who shaped Pangasinan language and literature were deliberately ignored: Pablo Mejia, Juan Villamil, Maria Magsano, Pedro Sison. etc...
This Nov. 13 is going to be a very sad day for the Pangasinan writers. And yes, there are only four of them left - Sergio Bumadilla, Leonarda Baltazar (Amor Cico), Dr. Linda Andaya and Santiago Villafania.

I had a chance to meet with Dir. Jaime Lucas (DTI Pangasinan) last Oct. 30 in Dagupan City. I presented him a copy of my 2nd book Malagilion: Soniton Pangasinan. He is encouraging me to come out with a directory of Pangasinan writers / authors and perhaps a canon of Pangasinan Literature.
On the other hand, Dr. Linda Andaya informed me that the Ulupan na Pansiansia'y Salitan Pangasinan is temporarily moved to no.27 Libsong East, Lingayen, Pangasinan until we will find a permanent office.
Dr. Andaya is also coming out with her first collection of Pangasinan short stories, Gamal.
